(Bring Mentoring Beyond School Walls)
Ft. Myers– January 14, 2016 – Students from Cypress Lake High School will gain a special learning experience outside their classroom this school year, thanks to a partnership between Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast and FineMark National Bank & Trust.
The high school students “Littles” will meet at least twice a month with the FineMark employees “Bigs” in a business setting, giving students the opportunity to experience what it means to work for a corporation, learn business etiquette and identify educational requirements for professional success.
“We are grateful for our relationship with FineMark National Bank and Trust,” said Joy Mahler, CEO/President of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast. “We invite other local companies to take their lead and provide this workplace mentoring opportunity for their employees.”
The program, called Beyond School Walls, aims to help at-risk children reach their fullest potential. Launched in 2008 at Big Brothers Big Sisters National headquarters Comcast’s Beyond School Walls program is the nation’s largest workplace mentoring program in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, with more than 300 mentoring matches anticipated this school year, including thirty-four matches in Ft. Myers.
Research shows that children in the Beyond School Walls program have improved focus in school, improved grades, and a positive change in attitudes or perceptions.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast provides one-to-one mentoring relationships to children ages 6-18 years old throughout the Gulf Coast of Florida in Sarasota, Manatee, DeSoto, Highlands, Hardee, Charlotte, Lee, Hendry & Collier counties. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast holds itself accountable for children in its program to achieve measurable outcomes, such as educational success; avoidance of risky behaviors; and higher aspirations, greater confidence and better relationships.
