If you have an iphone, we have a serious threat to share with you, targeting Apple IDs. Security experts have uncovered a sophisticated text messaging campaign, designed to trick you into sharing your Apple ID credentials.
Here’s how the scam works, hackers send out text messages that look like they’re really from Apple. The messages urgently request that you click on a link for an important iCloud update or verification. Instead of taking you to Apple, the link directs you to a malicious site that prompts you to enter your Apple ID and password.
You are then directed to what looks like an outdated iCloud login page, where you’re prompted to enter your credentials. This information is gold for cybercriminals because it gives them access to your personal and financial date and control over your devices.
Here’s what is so important to remember, Apple will never reach out via text, email or phone call asking for your Apple ID password or iCloud credentials. So, if it happens, do not respond. Also, Apple will never make urgent requests. Scammers play off your emotions and urgency and fear are two of the biggest.
If you suspect you’ve received a phishing attempt or inadvertently clicked on a phishing link related to your Apple ID, immediate action is essential to protect your information and account.
Here are steps you can take to secure your account and personal information:
The first and most crucial step is to change your Apple ID password to something solid and unique that hasn’t been used on other accounts. If you downloaded anything from the phishing link or entered sensitive information, scan your device for malware using trusted antivirus software. Review your Apple account for any unusual activity or changes made without your consent. If you’re concerned about the integrity of your account or need assistance, contact Apple Support directly for guidance. And, if not already enabled, set up two-factor authentication for an added layer of security on your account. It takes a few extra seconds to log in, but it’s time well spent.
And remember, if you ever feel uneasy about a request or think you’ve exposed yourself to cybercriminals, you can always reach out to us FineMark. We will do all we can to help you secure your accounts and your personal information.
